Shozo Tomioka: May 8th — June 29th

::: Opening Reception: May 8th, 6 – 9 pm :::

Project Basho is pleased to announce a photography exhibition, “Shozo Tomioka: Images from Noto Peninsula.” The show will run from May 8th through June 29th. An opening reception will be held on May 8th from 6–9 pm as a part of 2nd Thursday Openings in the area.

The exhibition features 25 silver prints by Tomioka, made in the 1950’s. These images depict the lives of Wajima, a small fishing village in the Noto Peninsula, the surrounding area, and the Japan Sea. Influenced by Ken Domon, a prominent Japanese photographer from the same generation, Tomioka captures the harsh and poor, yet lively and joyful, lives of fishermen and women. With a keen eye for composition, Tomioka photographed at the same eye level as his subjects.

In conjunction with the opening for the exhibition, Project Basho is also hosting an informational session for destination trips to Japan and France. At this occasion, anyone will be able to talk to the trip organizers and ask more questions about each of the trips. This event will be accompanied by sake and wine tasting from both regions, sponsored by Star Cellars, a distributor of fine sake and wine in Philadelphia.
